FOREST GROUSE HUNTS
NE Washington is Forest Grouse Mecca. With the lack of hunters, beautiful terrain and quality birds, you will truly be hunting in Gods country. We hunt populations of forest grouse that are arguably hard to match anywhere else in the Northwest. There are three species of grouse that we hunt here at Northern lights lodge:
Ruffed Grouse-
This is most prominent grouse found in the woods. They range throughout the forest near the logging roads and clear cuts and they hold great on point with our professionally trained pointers. Smaller in size than the other species, they make up for their size by the way they explode through the trees not to be seen again for the remainder of the hunt. We call them “forest rockets”.
Blue Grouse-
Blues are found in and around the open ridges of the gorgeous mountain landscapes. The Blues are not as populous as the Ruffed but they are the 3rd largest grouse in North America. These birds are cunning. After pointed and flushed they bob and weave their way through the thick forest. Landing out of harms way on an evergreen branch, they will stand like a statue so as to not be seen by the hunter or scented by the dogs.
Spruce Grouse-
The Spruce Grouse is considered the king of the mountain or should we say "forest grouse". This game bird has an attitude as large as the mountains that it resides in. These grouse are found at elevations above 4000 feet in and around the edges of logged woods and standing thick forests. When pointed they can be seen standing on a log or stump starring at the dog as to be saying how secure they feel by having such faith in its camouflaged feathers. Once flushed, they glide as if in no hurry to go towards the denser forest.
